Methlick Cricket Club, Aberdeenshire

Welcome to Methlick Cricket Club and the 2016 season.

Hello and welcome to the Methlick cricket clubs' web site.

On behalf of our President Lord Aberdeen and all of us here at Methlick CC, thank you for taking a look at the MCC website and a warm welcome to anyone considering joining our club and a very warm welcome to existing members and players to the 2016 season.

At the time of writing (February) we await the Aberdeen Grades Association to publish the fixtures list but suffice to say at this stage that we will be fielding two teams this season as usual. The first team will compete in Grade II and the second team in Grade IV.

Both of these teams have the potential to top their respective grades so it will be an interesting and fun season.

We have also a planned tour to Holland to play three games (leave ABZ 31 July returning Friday the 5th August). The last time we toured, we enjoyed the cricket almost as much as the social side!!!!! A great success. If you would like to go, talk to Jay at the Ythanview or indeed any of the teams.

The summer Gala is fixed for the 28 of August 2016 so make that a date in your diary. The annual Sporting Dinner is awaiting our intended Guest Speaker to get back to us with a date. You will know the name and you will enjoy hearing him speak, he has had us all falling off our chairs with laughter before!

As always may I use this message to ask for more players to come and join us. We always welcome joiners and especially youngsters keen to try the game of cricket. Jamie Jones our Junior Section Leader is an ECB qualified coach and we have in place all the regulatory folk to assist, monitor and guide our players whatever age they be.

I would also like to open the invitation to help out to anyone who would and could assist with what I always call the “Third team”. That is the maintenance and ground staff side of getting a cricket pitch into shape after the rigours of winter. This year more than most after the flooding we had in Methlick. There is a huge amount of work that goes into producing what is universally acclaimed as the best village cricket ground in Aberdeenshire.

My very best wishes to all players and support for the 2016 season.

Match Reports in Brief
Cup Match Reports in Brief

Saturday 6th of August
1st XI Methlick vs Crathie @ Balmoral Estate

A late start and the threat of rain never far away meant that the visit to Banchory Castle was reduced to a 40 overs-a-side match. With the Queen in residence she was not expecting to see a high scoring game with the outfield being very lush. For Crathie this was a must-win game and defeat meant relegation to Grade 3.

Saturday 30th of July
1st XI Methlick vs QX-Stoneywood Dyce @ Lairds

Almost miraculously, after valiant efforts by the ground crew, Lairds resurfaced and was deemed playable for Saturday’s visit from Queen’s Cross. Pooled water lay below the grass but after so many recent void games due to the weather both sides wanted to play a game almost at any cost.

Sunday 24th July

1st XI Methlick vs Kemnay-Kintoy @ Kemnay

Once again Lairds looked more like a fishing pond than a cricket field and the game against Fraserburgh on Saturday was a wash-out. Warm weather on Sunday hadn’t alleviated the problem sufficiently for the twice cancelled game against Kemnay Kintore to take place, but overnight steps to prepare a strip in Kemnay meant that the fixture could finally take place, albeit at the visitors home ground.

Saturday 18th of June

1st XI Methlick vs 2nd AGSFPs @ Rubislaw.

After a week of driving rain it seemed very unlikely that any cricket would take place this weekend, with Lairds being a quagmire and no chance of play for the 2nds the first team travelled to a surprisingly dry Harlaw.

Saturday 11th of June

1st XI Methlick vs Fraserburgh @ East Links.

Saturday saw a return to almost wintry conditions at the Broch with leaden skies and a cold wind blowing in from the sea. Fraserburgh batted first and Corrie Bowie got off to a confident start as Steve Murphy struggled to overcome the erratic bounce off the lively wicket.

Saturday 4th of June

1st XI Methlick vs Crathie @ Lairds

A cloudless Lairds saw the visit of Crathie on Saturday and Methlick needed to consolidate on a moderate start to the season. The ground looked in tip-top condition although there were hints of a damp wicket underneath the hard surface which may favour the bowlers. Crathie won the toss and decided to bat, which is probably the option that would have been taken by Methlick.

Saturday 14th of May

1st XI Methlick vs  Inverurie Don Valley @ Kellands Park

Further periods of wind and sun had left a hard wicket and slick looking outfield at Kellands Park for Saturday’s trip to Inverurie, hinting at plenty of runs on a cold and sunny day. Methlick had won both fixtures home and away last season but were without Tim Duffy, Brian Anderson and Mike Bremanesen, their places taken by Tom Acton, Mark Colley-Davis, Alasdair Smith and Alan Hill making his debut.

Saturday 7th of May

1st XI Methlick vs Banchory @ Lairds

After last week’s cancellation due to a waterlogged pitch, sun and wind during the week had allowed Charlie Coulson and Neil Purdie to prepare a wonderful Lairds playing area for the first game of the season against Banchory under the new format of a 45 over-a-side game with no draws.

Saturday 2nd of July
Bon Accord Cup (Semi-Final)
1st XI Methlick vs 2nd XI AGSFPs @  Duthie Park (D)

Today saw the semi-final of Grade 2 Bon Accord Cup at Duthie Park and after the week’s rain and poor forecast for the afternoon there seemed little likelihood of the game going ahead. However, on arrival the temperature was almost sultry although the wicket was similar to putty.

Saturday 28th of May
Bon Accord Cup
1st XI Methlick vs Banchory @ Burnett Park (D)

Cup win for Methlick

Methlick CC went to play BanchoryCC at Burnett Park on a very green under prepared track which with the home side winning the toss decided to bat 1st, perhaps due to a much changed and under strength side.

2nd XI Methlick vs 2nd Grampian @ Lairds (D)
